Honey, I'm old

Now BEFORE I START THIS BLOG, let me preface:

* I do NOT think I'm old.
* I do NOT want to offend anybody.
* This blog is for COMEDIC PURPOSES ONLY. (Yes, it did happen.)

Now you may continue on with your regularly scheduled blog-reading.

I finally got back together with my new employers for work. I had to take Natty and a friend to the barn for horseback (the barn that's 40 miles away...that I have to, literally, drive 6 cities away to reach...the barn that sits in the middle of nowhere but still has an internet signal (yes!)...yeah, that barn). I surrendered control of the radio to Natty's friend, who is also 12 but looks and acts like she's going on 17. Rap music blasted at full blast! The whole way! Woohoo!

After, oh, thirty continuous minutes of Li'l John or Romeo or whoever the heck it is, I tenatively ask if we can change the channel.

"Sure!" she chirps.
I close my eyes and say a quick prayer that she is an NPR fan..."Think" is on, and I like that show. Eh, no such luck. She hits Justin Timberlake's "Sexyback."

"OHMYGOD. This song is, like, SO OLD," she screams.

It's ... it's like a YEAR old.

That's old?

Before I can stop myself, I blurt out, "Honey, you don't know what OLD is. I remember when BRITNEY SPEARS was dating Justin."

Natty's friend slowly turns down the music.
They look at me in awe and wonder.

"How old ARE you???" Natty's friend asks.
"Old," I reply.

And in that moment, I felt it. Oy vey. I am old. I should have kept my mouth shut, too.

"Yeah, and I even remember Princess Di's death," I add.

Blank stares.

"Who's Princess Di?" Natty asks.

Oh, man. I'm an old fart. I really am.

Holy CRAP--is this a gray hair?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I'll be back later. I'm going to go buy some damn hair dye.

My sister

My darling sister, who blogs at www.lifeofadancer312.blogspot.com:

Her (giggling hysterically): "My hair always tickles my neck when I laugh!"

Enough said.

Up, down, turn around...

Thanks to D. for the update below :-)

I've gotten an influx of...um...very interesting google searches in the past few days. I'll share them with you because I'm just too kind:

(Starting with the least best, working up to #1))

8. "Good quality the nanny diaries free online"
7. "What to say when quitting a Nanny job"
6. "Quitting nanny" (Y'all, you know how that turned out for me. Perhaps you should look elsewhere if you're trying to find out a good way to quit...)
5. "Crazy nanny stories"
Okay, so those are the (fairly) normal ones. Now it starts getting interesting. I have no earthly idea how these people got to my blog this way.
4. "pee so badly wet" (???)
3. "peter citoyens puzzle" (??????)
2. "click new karl box 1978" (??????????)
The #1 (in my opinion) best google search that lead people to my blog...
1. "jdm congressional weed prix" (????????????????????????????)

I have NO CLUE what the last 4 are. I mean, I'm guessing a weirdo googled #4 just to see what would happen. But #'s 3, 2 and 1? I mean, how did the google people think to send them my way???

It's made for some very amusing thought processes. I actually googled them myself to see what came up. All I got for "pee so badly wet" was a lot of pee stories/information. Nada for Peter Citoyen, nada for Karl's box (or Karl Box), and nada for "jdm congressional weed prix." Huh.

If y'all are out there, will you pretty please tell me why you googled those things? I'm very interested.

D here

Hello... D here

the Nanny spends so much time with you that I thought i should meet you.
So it's nice to meet you.

Hope to speak to you soon.

p.s. The Nanny is awesome
pps. obviously i am not as grammatically particular as the nanny

*clears throat* ahem, ahem...

First of all, I have to thank Amy at Life Ticks On for this FABULOUS award. You're so sweet! Secondly, I'd like to thank all my fans. You guys are awesome. All the support, advice...it's priceless, y'all, really. And I need to thank my pupster Max for allowing me to take so many ridiculous pictures of him to post on here. And I have to mention my parents and sister--they're amazing and I LOVE Y'ALL SO MUCH! Shout-outs to my friends out there, he-eyyyyy! Thank you to the barrista at Star.bucks for the delicious passionfruit lemonade thing that was so yummy yesterday, and to Lula my bird for pooping on my finger last night. I've got to mention everyone over at The Office, I LOVE y'all! OH, and I have to thank the academy...

Cue the Jeopardy theme song...

Stilllllll no word from the R's.

I find it very interesting that I heard nothing for 2 weeks, and then when I sent an ultimatum, Mrs. R. got back to me within 17 minutes. And I replied 2 minutes later. And have heard nothing since.

This hurts worse than pulling off a bandaid

Ouch, y'all. While checking up on a blog that I LOVE, I discovered that I'd been removed from the person's blogline. Ouch. I'm hurt, I must say. Why did this happen? Have my posts not been good enough??? Have I not commented on the person's blog enough??? My mind reels.

(I hope y'all realize I'm not seriously complaining. Just making sure.)

(I do wonder why I was removed, though. I try to keep my blog nice and clean...and fairly interesting...though I do complain a lot...)

(Maybe I'm just not funny enough?)

(Can you tell I'm procrastinting doing work?)

(Why the heck would that person remove me???)

(Lord. I need a life.)

Baby, when it's cold outsi-ee-iiide

You guys, I don't know how I'm going to survive up north come August.

It's so cold here down south! On another note, I'm about to book a trip up north there with D. in April. (I'm paranoid, I know, but just in case any of y'all are stalkers, I'm not posting the exact city.) She's going to look at some schools and I'm going to try to get to know my way around, seeing as I'll be moving there in 7 months :-)

OKAY. So I'm going to poll y'all to the left about what to do with the R.'s situation. Here's a quick recap:

* You guys remember the back-and-forth stuff we e-mailed while I was visiting my grandparents several weeks ago. If you forgot, scroll down a bit.
* A week and a half after I got back, on a Monday, Mrs. R. e-mailed me a nice, nonchalant e-mail (there's a post about that one too) about getting together to say goodbye to the girls, returning their carseats & stroller. She stressed that we should do it sooner rather than later.
* I replied, politely, that I could go over that Thursday.
* No response.
* Thursday morning, I e-mailed again. I forwarded my last e-mail to them and said that maybe the last e-mail went into their spam filter?
* No response.

It's been almost 5 days since that. Where I'm living ain't that big, so the stroller & carseats are taking up a lot of space. I need to get them out of here, and I really do want to say goodbye to the girls. But I've realized (and come to terms with the fact that) it probably won't happen.

What do you guys think I should do? (Vote to the left.)

P.S. I'M UNPRIVATE!!! WOOHOO!!! At this point, I just don't care about them finding my blog. So yippee for being unprivate!!
P.P.S. #4000 is coming up! Let me know who it is!

My four new girls = Nat.alie, Isa.belle, Chris.tina and Oli.via

Aren't those pretty names? I think so. I don't like using N. or I. or any of the other ones either. Maybe I'll just come up with nicknames? Or maybe I'll just use their real names, with periods in them?

What do y'all think?

The thing that started it all

I named my blog after the book The Nanny Diaries. I'd read it and enjoyed it, and commiserated a bit with its protagonist.

I saw the movie tonight.

Good lord.

The movie itself may not be great, but wow--you guys...that was my life. Laura Linney's character...that's how Mrs. R. was. It was spooky, the resemblance. Except there's no happy ending in it for me. I mean, the R.'s aren't filthy rich and Mrs. R. does work, but their personalities are identical. It brought back lots of anger and weird emotions just remembering all the sh*t that happened with them. People telling me I just needed to quit, to get myself out of that situation, and yet I just couldn't. I couldn't leave the girls. I ultimately did, and you guys know how hard that was.

It's 1:35 a.m. and I'm angry and sad all over again.

I have yet to see the girls. I e-mailed Mr. & Mrs. R. several days ago asking to see them this week. No reply.

I miss them.

Enough of this pity party for tonight. I'm going to bed.

I've gotta be good at SOMETHING, right???

*Update below*

Yeah...and ceramics ain't it. I was inspired by Monica H.'s beautiful and artistic creations to show off some of my own. I took a ceramics course my senior year (that's right, it was a year-long course) and ... er ... I wasn't very good. I was okay at the wheel, though I could only make small cylinders, but I STUNK at hand-molding. And glazing? Ha. Ha. Riiiiiight.

Here's a bowl I made for my mom. I sent it home to her and she put it out in the kitchen with some fruit in it, like a good mommy. But when I came home again, it was gone. Banished into the cupboards. I was insulted. But I still love her.

This is the inside, looking down on it (again, excuse the BAD lighting and quality, it's my cell phone camera):

And here's the outside (I flipped it upside down for the picture):

The inside & outside have a mint-green underglaze. The rim is a deep, shiny blue, and the little pink heart in the middle I put in for my 3-year-old cousin Marley, who was in treatment for leukemia at the time. (She's now in remission.) The outside is done with lavender, deep blue and gold glaze sponged on.

So that was about the extent of my talents in ceramics! I made a few other bowls and a (very) lopsided teapot, and it was all fun to do. I'm no beast like Sidera or Monica H., but at least I can do better than a cracked spoonrest, eh, Zanzi? :-)

On another note, I start my new job tomorrow! I'm so excited. I may not post again tomorrow, but I'll let you guys know how it went after that!

Edited to add: Today went great! I drove N., the oldest girl, 40 miles away to her horseback lesson, and back. That was it! She's a really cool, sweet girl and we had fun together. Due to scheduling difficulties, I won't see them again until next Tuesday, but I'll keep you guys posted as always!

News! News! News!

A gold star for me--cause I GOT A JOB!!!!!!!!!!

I start Tuesday and I'm SO excited! They want me full time, but since I'm already working part-time in the morning, I said no. So instead I'll just be doing an after school type of thing, mostly chauffeuring their kids around to various activities!

It's a really sweet family. FOUR (count 'em, FOUR) girls, ranging in ages from 5 to 12. The dad works but the mom is a stay at home mom--she just needs help with all 4 girls having different activities during the week. The parents couldn't be sweeter and the girls are adorable! So it'll be like I'll have 2 girls and she'll have 2 girls, just running around from place to place. It's only about 4-5 hours a day, 3 or so days a week. VERY minimal. But they pay really well and are chipping in for gas, so it works! A little money goes a long way, esp. with my administrative assistant job!

Can you guys tell I'm thrilled? This is perfect for me. I really can't wait to start!

Weights lifted off my shoulders:
* finding a new job (!!!)
* a major scholarship application was due yesterday, and it's in and FINISHED!
* I've started writing a letter to the R.'s (I'll share it with y'all before I give it to them, don't worry!)
* I'm really excited about this job!

I'm happy happy happy! Once I see A. and E., give the R.'s their letter and be done with that, all will be well. I'll keep you guys posted--and thanks, as always, for your incredible support!

P.S. Once I've given the R.'s their letter, I'm making this blog un-private. Woohoo!

Where can I buy some of that closure crap?

I saw E. and Mr. R. yesterday.

They were about 25 feet away but I ducked behind some bookshelves so they couldn't see me.

One glimpse of sweet little E. and my heart ached, raw and grieving, for the girls I had practically raised since they were babies.

I need closure. I need to e-mail Mrs. R. back a time that I can drop off the stroller and car seats and say goodbye. I'm going to ask if I can take the girls out for lunch or something, just so I won't have to be in their house. I'll understand if they say no, but I'll try nonetheless.

I'm also writing them a letter. It's hard.

On a lighter note, I may have some good news to share with y'all! I'm waiting for a phone call later today or tomorrow. I'll keep you posted.

I have 2 essays, the letter and a TON of work to be doing right now, so I'm going to run. Cross your fingers for good news!

My babies

Y'all have seen my little Maxipoo, but here's another picture just for grins:

Now, to make her grand T(O)ND debut, is Lulabelle!

Lula, or Lu (as we call her), just celebrated her first birthday. She's a sweet, albeit crazy, lovable parakeet. She's out of her cage quite often, helping me with homework...

sitting on a purple crazy straw...

playing with dice and generally being annoying. She loves being out and flying around, and when we put her back in her cage, she gives us this look:

She's very demanding--if we have food out, we HAVE to give her a bite or she won't leave us alone. She also loves it when D. & I play cards so she can mess them up and pull them away from us! But the coolest thing about Lu is that she talks like CRAZY! We have so much fun teaching her to say weird things. Her repetoire includes:

* Get me out of here!
* I can talk, can you fly?
* Oops, I pooped!
* Cathy is cute
* The dog is depressed
* Pretty bird!
and, my personal favorite, * Harry Potter mustn't go back to Hogwarts! (in the words of Dobby)

We're currently teaching her to say ¿Dónde están mis pantalones? The funny thing is that Lu will mix up the phrases, so occasionally we'll hear "The dog is cute," or "Harry Potter is depressed." Once we even heard "The dog is pooped is cute!"

That concludes my little update about Lula. Sorry about the bad quality of the pictures, they're all cell phone pics. I haven't replied to Mrs. R. yet, I'll keep y'all posted on that. More later!

Shaky ground

Just as I was finding some peace & closure about my whole Mrs. & Mr. R. situation (thinking maybe things are just over; there'll be no more drama, no more seeing them, and finally being okay with it), I got an e-mail from Mrs. R. My e-mail server is down or I'd post it now, so I'll have to post it later. But basically it was happy-go-lucky and like nothing was wrong. She hoped I'd had a good time on my trip. She also said she had forgotten about the stroller and thanked me for reminding her about it. She said something like "the girls were so excited to see me," and she hoped I could come over sometime next week for a while.

It was a nice, pleasant e-mail. It's like the e-mails we exchanged last week never happened.

I was angry at first, then upset--I kind of hoped this was all over. And I'm still mad about what they said to me. I hate that it seems like they've gotten over it. I haven't replied, but at this point this has just been so sucky that I want it all behind me. As much as I want to see the girls and say goodbye, I really had gotten comfortable with thinking that I wouldn't be able to again.

I realize at this point that I'm acting immature, and that bugs me. I should just suck it up and go over there. I just don't know what they've told the girls about me and I'd rather not spend time with Mr. & Mrs. R.

What do you say, guys? I felt like the shaky ground that I've been walking on for the past week was finally starting to solidify--but now it's like the ground has been pulled out from under me.

Please tell me if I'm being immature or wrong. I hate this.

LIVE from Nanny's couch...it's THURSDAY MORNING!

How many of those headlines can I do before they get annoying? Hm. Probably already are.

ANYWAY. A certain unnamed pupster (whose picture appears below) could NOT get comfortable last night to sleep--moving, rolling back and forth, groaning, snuggling up against me and then crawling away--making it very very difficult to sleep. And said unnamed pupster, who is now snuggled up beside me asleep, woke me up RIDICULOUSLY early this morning.

Here is a picture of the guilty party:

What can I do? He's ridiculously cute.

ANYWAY. I found a semi-interesting little survey on someone else's blog so I thought I'd give it a whirl. Wheeee!

1. What did you do in 2007 that you’d never done before?

Took a college class, had a full-time job, uhhh...I think that's it. How boring.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

It was probably to eat right and lose weight, which I did, so yay me! And nah, I'm not making any more. Blah.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Not that I can think of?

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Again, none that I can think of...I am so lucky!

5. What countries did you visit?

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?

Ummmm time/motivation to give back to others--i.e., charity work.

7. What dates from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

Dec. 14, but I can't get in to that here. Someone will know why, though ;-)

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Graduating high school with a fairly good GPA, getting into a good college, and finishing my French class with an A+.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Like I said earlier--not finding/having time to give back to others.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Illness, yeah. I've never really been sick before but this has been the year of sickness! Food poisoning twice, the flu BADLY (and then a reaction to the meds they put me on), nasty throat/chest infections, bronchitis, allergies and more colds than you can count!

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Oh goodness. Perhaps bubble gum & crayons to put in my purse to make the girls happy? I don't know, really. I basically only spend my money on necessities & food since I'm saving up for college.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

Well, honestly, Mr. & Mrs. R.'s.

14. Where did most of your money go?

GAS. Good lord. I've spent SO much on gas.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Seeing friends/going to D.'s lakehouse!

16. What song will always remind you of 2007?

Goodness. I have no idea.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you: a) happier or sadder?

Um...about the same?

b) thinner or fatter?

c) richer or poorer?

Richer, but it's all for college.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

More reading!

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Wasted time doing nothing on the computer or watching mindless TV.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

At my parents' house with them & my little sis.

21. Did you fall in love in 2007?

Mayyyyyybe ;-)

22. What was your favorite TV program?

The Office or House. Or Scrubs (sorry, D.!).

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

I don't think so. I mean, I'm passionately upset with my employers, but I wouldn't use the word hate.

24. What was the best book you read?

Oh there were so many! Really great ones? Uhhh Harry Potter book 7 (I'm a nerd, I know), I Capture the Castle, March...it goes on.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?

The movie Once.

26. What did you want and get?

Another year of happiness and health.

27. What did you want and not get?

Enough free time to spend with friends.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?

No clue. I don't see many movies!

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I ain't tellin'--and I went to school. And came home. And that was about it.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

More money in my college fund would have taken a big weight off my shoulders.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?

I'm a nanny. Or was a nanny. But once a nanny, always a nanny at heart. ANYWAY. Comfortable (I know Stacy & Clinton HATE that word) so that I can get around on the floor in it, and casual. And dark-colored so stains don't show up as easily. :-)

32. What kept you sane?

D. Without question.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

No idea.

34. What political issue stirred you the most?

Oh god, you REALLY don't want to get me started. I suppose basic human rights (a lot of which that have been taken away) is a big one (& also a big category--there are lots of subcategories), as well as the war, of course, and health insurance. Womens' rights. Lies from the Bush administration. I have to stop myself now or I won't be able to later on...

35. Who did you miss?

My aunt Becky.

36. Who was the best new person you met?

All my AMAZING and FABULOUS blog readers and fellow bloggers! (Props to Monica H.!) :-)

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007.

99 cents in my college fund is better than 99 cents for So.nic french fries.

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

No idea....?

LIVE from Nanny's bed...it's TUESDAY AFTERNOON!

Sooooo...back home now, in bed. I'm sure that's the most riveting thing you've read all day, huh? :-)

* No news from Mr. & Mrs. R. No e-mail response, phone call, etc. Zip, zilch, nada.

* Partying with your grandparents CAN be fun, especially when they hand out party poppers with cool hats inside.

* Balderdash is a fun game.

* Airplanes make me airsick. Flying today was not fun.

* It was very bizarre flying from a place with tons of snow to where I am now, where there's no snow and it's fairly warm outside!

For the new year, I present 2008 facts about ME. Just kidding, I won't list that many. I'm not even sure there ARE that many. Howsabout 10? Or if I can't even think of that many, 5? (Thanks for the idea, Monica & Monica H.!)

1. My parents first heard my name when a woman shouted it across a gas station to her kid. They liked it. And since my parents are teachers, they wanted a name that none of their students had--so that was it!

2. I know I posted this on Monica H.'s site, but I'll post it here, too. I'm a strict vegetarian who also doesn't eat cheese. I'm not a vegan (I love milk & yogurt and stuff) but just won't eat cheese. This makes finding things to eat challenging. People ask me all the time why I don't just give it up but I'm too stubborn to go back :-)

3. My car is slathered in political bumper stickers.

4. I have an amazing sister (who is sitting right next to me & told me to write that).

5. Max the pupster was rescued from a daschund rescue service. (That's not about me, but oh well.)

6. I have to shower every morning or I can't wake up.

7. I like my coffee strong and pitch black. I can't drink it any other way.

8. My favorite food in the entire world is a salad pizza from a particular restaurant: It's a thin crust pizza with just sauce, no cheese, and a salad on top of it. It's amazing.

9. My walls are a very happy yellow.

10. Sometimes at night, I like to go to the nearest park and swing on the swingsets.

Thank you all for your kind and supportive comments, and also your input. It may sound cliche but I really do love & appreciate my blogger friends!

Here's to an amazing 2008!
