It's over

I quit this evening.

Earlier than I thought I would--but, I just had to.

It was so hard.

Things have turned so nasty with Mr. & Mrs. R. and I ... and that's what saddens me most. That it became nasty.

I leave town tomorrow morning to visit my grandparents. I return next week. I only have 5 babysitting days left with the girls.

I'll miss the incredibly. I've grown up with them--I've been with them for 7 years.

Seven years is a damn big chunk of my life.

I'm incredibly sad. Mother Nature must have sensed that because it's raining hard here. It's comforting.

I don't have a new job yet.

I feel guilty to you guys for quitting for the ridiculous reason that I feel like I owe you funny nanny stories. That sentence didn't make sense, but whatever. I'm sorry, guys. Hang on with me while I try to figure out what next will come in my life. Another nanny job? Starbucks? Sitting at home on my butt every day until August? (That would make for excellent blogging material, I know--The Life and Times of a Lazy Butt.)

I'm going to sit back for a while now. Forgive me if I don't comment on your blogs. I'll be back soon--hopefully with a new job. Stay tuned.
I am deeply, deeply saddened today to hear of Benazir Bhutto's death.

May she rest in peace.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, dear readers!

Er...

Should I say HAPPY HOLIDAYS instead? Tracey R.'s blog had a great discussion about that topic just the other day. But I digress.

Sorry for the lack o' posting! Holidays chez moi is busy. We actually just came in the door from late night services and pupster Max is all snuggled up next to me. I think I hear Santa Claus rooting around in the next room and it smells like Christmas cookies and it's just generally a happy, happy time!

I'm officially on Christmas break! Woohoo! (Though Mr. & Mrs. R. did call and say they might need me Wed. or Thurs. Um...yeah. I told them I'd give them 3 hours MAXIMUM. It's my break.) I had a great time at the lake with D., even though it was so cold we stayed inside most of the time. We played a few games and we won't talk about how they went...especially that one game of "Lord of the Rings Monopoly" we played with her younger brother...

YOU GUYS. I have a movie I must recommend. Now, I usually don't, cause I'm an extremely picky movie person. But we watched this amazing movie tonight. It's called "Once," and it's Irish (it's in English, but you need to use the subtitles cause of the thick accents). It's a teeny-tiny indie movie that just blew me away. It's about a street musician and a poor working girl from the Czec Republic and though it may not sound like much, it's just incredible. The director (who also wrote and produced it) didn't hire actors for the film, he hired musicians who could also act (incidentally, they were friends of his). The soundtrack alone to the movie is just amazing and has won a ton of awards. I plan on buying it very soon.

Okay, that's the end of my plug for "Once." You guys really should check it out. It's only 80 mins long (I think) but a very sweet movie.

(No nannies were paid in the recommendation of this film. Feel free to chip in, though. College ain't cheap.)

No word from the Craigs.list people...I'll give them a week or so though cause it's Christmas.

I may be quitting as soon as this Wednesday. More on that later.

But for now, I'm off to be with my sister and Max the pupster. He's just too cute for words. Here's evidence:

That's my sis smooching him. Isn't he just ridiculously cute? Okay, okay, I get it--enough Max pictures already. :-)

I'm off! Have a great day today, no matter what you're celebrating!

Ain't No Mountain High Enough

You guys!

It's been a crazy week. Make yourselves comfortable, have a cup of tea, and let's get with it.

Monday: My new job in the morning. Lots of secretary busy work, which, nerdy me, I actually enjoy. I get immense satisfaction from completing small unimportant tasks. Girls were sick and feverish, so I stood up for myself and said I wasn't coming in. Honestly, y'all, I've been sick since August. I'm just starting to get better so I do NOT want to mess it up!

Tuesday: Got sick. Woohoo. New job in the morning. A. actually went to school, so I started nannywork picking her up (Mr. R. stayed with E.) She was great for the first 5 or so mins in the car, then crashed. I pulled over and checked her and she had a REALLY high fever. I sped home and got her in bed while Mr. R. called the doctor. He took both girls there later that evening and I was free to go early.

Wednesday: Went to nannywork 2 hrs early cause Mr. & Mrs. R. had a meeting. Watched Sponge.Bob on TV w/ E. Normally I don't allow TV for my nannykids at ALL. But when you're sick and grumpy, Sponge.Bob can work wonders. Picked A. up and she was in a great mood--we had a great afternoon together (a rarity. It was so much fun) while E. conked out on the couch.

Thursday: My Thursdays are so sad now that the Office isn't on. Reruns are good, but mundane. The girls were good. Cranky on occasion, but nothing really sticks out.

Today: Very, very busy. I woke up at the crack of dawn to go Christmas shopping for the girls before I went to my new job. $40 and LONG lines later, I was done. I flew to new job, worked, flew to lunch with an old friend who was in town, and flew to nannyjob. I was exhausted before the busiest part of my day started! Luckily, the girls were good and we got in a ton of playtime.

Now I sit, re-reading my blog and realizing how lame-o it is (sorry, guys) while D. is upstairs snoring. We played games earlier and I beat her in both Uno and Hand and Foot. I am amazing.

D. and I are going to her lakehouse tomorrow so I won't be back for a few days. Until then, I'll try to rack up some good blog material...(ha ha, I'm so funny. Like that's going to happen.)

P.S. I e-mailed a few different people who need nannies that I saw on Craig.slist. Cross your fingers!

P.P.S. Should I trust Craigs.list?

P.P.P.S. Is it weird to meet your potential future employees online?

P.P.P.P.S. Note to self: more than one P.S. is tiring on the fingers.

Oh, people

To the person who got here by googling "diaper poop change wipes bed nanny," I want to meet you.

That made my day.

Woohoo for you guys!

Thanks for all the encouraging notes & comments on the last post. I'm scared as heck not having a full-time job yet for when I resign but we'll see what happens!

Sooooo...this is an E. story from last Friday. I posted (www.theonlinenannydiaries.blogspot.com/2007/10/hi-everybody-e.html) a while ago about how when she's eating lunch, she likes for me to do fun things--the seesaw, the wiggly worm, the window etc--when spooning food into her mouth (she doesn't need me to, but likes me to sometimes when she's pretending she's a baby). Lately she's started doing it to herself.

She'll pick up a piece of food and say some jibber-jabber (sometimes it's still hard to understand her!) and then put the food in her mouth. It's pretty cute to watch. But on Friday, after she had done that a few times, she again picked up a piece of food but instead of putting it in her mouth, she just stared at it.

And stared at it.

And stared at it.

"E.?" I prompted. "Whatcha doin', babe?"

*silence*

"E.?"

*she bursts into tears*

"What's wrong, E.???"

I went over and hugged her and tried to figure out what was wrong. After many tears and much to-do, she finally whispered something to me: "I wanna do The Window but it's too COLD to open the window!" followed by more tears.

I sat there dumbly for a few minutes, not really knowing what to do or say. I mean, I get her logic--she wanted to do "the window" with her food, but she realized it was winter and too cold to open an actual window, so in her 3-year-old's mind she put that together and saw a problem--but it was just so darn funny. I didn't laugh, of course (not wanting to crush her imaginative spirit) but it took me a while to figure out what to do. She wouldn't accept that there was a difference in doing "the window" with food and opening an actual window.

So I jumped into my nannygear mind and proposed the following: that she and I quickly put on our coats so that it wouldn't be cold when she did "the window" with her food. I'm sure you all are completely confused by this point, but it made sense to her and me (hey, I think in 3-year-oldspeak) and it worked.

She ate the bite.

Score one for Nanny!

In other news, I just got my exam results: A+ on the exam, A+ for the semester. I'm thrilled and excited! Instead of taking another semester of French, I started a part-time job this morning as an administrative assistant for a local business. It's about 20 hrs a week and I can do it from home in my pj's, so I'm WAY happy. So at least when I quit my nanny job, I'll have a little extra income coming in just to help.

Anyway, I'm off. Keep up the great comments!

It's a secret, part deux

Hi guys. So...I'm private. I don't like it, but hey, it's safer this way. And it's only temporary (until mid-January or so). Anyway, please continue to visit the blog & invite your friends to (they can e-mail me for an invite).

Sooooo.

The big news.

I'm officially a quitter.

That's it, I'm going to quit.

It'll happen the first week in January (I'm staying long enough to get a letter of recommendation and my Christmas bonus. Evil? Yeah, but they owe it to me) and I just made the decision a few days ago. I haven't posted a lot of stuff about my job cause I've been afraid they'd find me, but honestly, if not for the girls, I would have quit for a long time ago. But after the past week or so, it's just been enough's enough, and I can't take it any longer.

I hate this.

I'm devastated.

I'll miss the girls so badly, but I can't take any more of Mr. and Mrs. R.'s abuse. But I'm not going to say anything more about that cause this is a happy blog! :-)

I'm going to try to find another nanny job right away. I'd love to have a little baby now, since I haven't had a little one in a while. I'll see what I can find! (Anybody need a nanny? I'll move!) But if I can't find anything since it's mid-way through the school year, I'll probably turn to Starbucks. I can see this blog in a few months: The Online Starbucks Employee. Wheeeee!

(FYI: I'll go public again after I've finished my two weeks' notice. My last day will be Jan. 18.)

Anyway, I'm closing up for now. I'm going to watch a movie and head to bed.

P.S. Now that I'm private & have LOTS fewer readers, y'all are going to have to make up for the lack of comments. So comment away :-)

It's a secret

Okay, guys. I'm doing it for real this time. I'm going private cause I have a secret to tell y'all. It's big...and yet, sad. I'll go private on Dec. 15 so e-mail me before then.

E-mail me for an invite, or post in the comments section. theonlinenanny@gmail.com

Backstreet's back, all right!

I'M FINISHED WITH MY CLASS!!!!! WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!

I took my final exam this morning (the above cartoon will finally clue you guys in on what kind of class I was taking) and I think I did pretty well. I got A's on all my assignments, tests and quizzes and hopefully the exam will be the same! I'll keep you guys posted.

So tomorrow morning...(drumroll please) I DON'T HAVE TO WAKE UP EARLY AND RUN TO CLASS. I can actually sleep in. How amazing is that??? It won't last long, though, cause I have a babysitting job Friday morning and on Monday morning I start my new part-time, in desperate need for money for college, job. It's as an administrative assistant and I'll be working about 20 hours a week. The good thing is that I can do it from my house, so I can do it in my jammies! Woohoo!

I have a feeling this'll be me tomorrow morning:

No, that's not me, and no, that's not Max, but you get the drift. My feet aren't QUITE that big. (Wait...is that a man?)

Anyway, I'm off to stay up late and watch TV--I can, because I don't have to wake up early tomorrow! WOOHOO!!!!

Edited to add: A certain unnamed pupster woke me up at 9 a.m. It was a nice sleep in, but not NEARLY as long as I wanted it to be. P.S. Who got 3000???

12.10.2007

Lucky #3000

Number 3,000 is coming up! Let me know if it's you!

Housekeeping! Housekeeping!

So sorry for the delay in an interesting post. Food poisoning knocked me flat on my back all weekend. It was just SO much fun. Thank goodness I'm better now...hi ho, hi ho, it's back to work I go!

So! A few anecdotes and a lovely picture and I'm on my way.

THE PROMISED TEASER from the last time I posted...

On Fridays A. gets picked up earlier from school than on the other days. I know that. I'm always on-time to get her, snacks in hand. But this Friday...wooftie. Oops.

I blame it on my book. I'm deep into Geraldine Brooks' Year of Wonders and I was just so engrossed in it that I had completely forgotten all concept of the outside world. So only when Mr. R. comes flying up the stairs yelling, "YOU FORGOT TO GET A.! YOU FORGOT TO GET A.!" did I snap out of my reverie and fly out the door...an hour late.

Oops.

A. was okay about it, though. I took her to McDonalds for her snack and all was forgotten. By her, at least. My employers are STILL talking about it.

Side note: E. asked me today what held strawberries together. Does anybody have an answer for that? The best I could come up with was, "Ummm...strawberry stuff?"

Annnnnd an anecdote...

I took the kids to Starbucks today for a snack. They're in love with the penguin-shaped cookies and ask for them on an almost daily basis. So today I treated them for their good behavior.

Let me preface this by saying that E.'s had a bad cold for a few days now. Anyway. We were walking in, and by the door was a bin of toys that Starbucks was collecting for kids in the hospital.

E: "I WANT THAT TOY!"
Me: "No, sweetie, those are for the sick kids."
E.: "I'M A SICK KID!"

How do you explain to a 3-year-old that yes, she is sick, but no, she's just not sick enough? Luckily, I was able to distract her with said penguin cookie.

Finally, a picture of the pupster. The quality is terrible cause it's with a cell phone camera, but Max just looked so pretty in his pearls that I couldn't resist. Actually they're D.'s pearls (she's the one holding him) but they just look so lovely on him, don't they?

12.09.2007

I'm so excited...and I just can't hide it

To the person who got to my blog by googling "estory readingbooks for kids," I don't think this is what you'll need...but (hopefully) this blog makes for good reading for adults!

And to the person who came by googling "read online nanny diaries the complete story," I don't think this is quite what you had in mind, either. I mean, I am a nanny, and this is my online diary, but I'm pretty sure you meant the novel.

But anyway, I'm thrilled you both came to my blog, and hope you'll come again. Have a nice day!

no title for this post

sick...with food poisoning or something similar but equally gross/no fun...i'm running on about 2 hrs of sleep (i'll leave what was going on last night up to your imagination...sorry to those eating...)

i had ideas for a nice long blog post for today but that's not going to happen...i'm just trying to keep things down (ginger ale, veggie broth). blah.

i'll leave you with a teaser for the next time i post. yesterday, i forgot to pick up A. from school. *wheee*

i'm going back to bed now.

12.05.2007

I'm not old enough for a fugly purse! ...or am I???

Note: Edited with a picture at the bottom.

I have entered into a scary, scary world.

A world of which I SWORE to myself that I'd never be a part.

It's a dark place here, people.

It's the land of the singular fugly purse (hereon known as SFPland).

I've always loved purses. I own roughly two million of varying sizes, colors, shapes, and designers (all fake, of course. Gotta love New York!). I take great pride in picking cool purses to go with my outfits.

Well, not anymore.

It's gotten to the point where I throw on clothes in desperation in the mornings--trying to find something clean, something dark that when the kids stain them, it won't show, something I can run around in without various body parts being exposed, you get my drift. Shoes? I've got them too! I love them! But instead of picking out the cute shoes, I throw on my grungy Birkenstocks and call it a morning. I barely brush my hair in the mornings (what's the point? It'll be messed up in twenty seconds) so a purse? Farrrrr from my mind.

It's really quite sad. I'm torn up about it.

Once I started nannying full time I gave up carrying small, cute purses every day. I used my BIG, usually-reserved-for-airplane-carry-on bags cause they'd hold a nice assortment of snacks, band-aids, changes of clothes, books, shoes, toys...everything I needed for a typical outing with my girls. (Now the atypical outings? Say, to the zoo? Yeah. I took a suitcase.)

Alas, my cute big bags have all worn out.

So I needed something else.

I considered buying a diaper bag, but most of them weren't big enough. And the ones that WERE big enough were very very expensive. We nannies aren't loaded, ya know.

So. I did the thing I'd always teased my mother about. I bought one cheap, big, plain black purse.

Boring.

Boring.

Boring.

But it goes with everything, it's big enough to carry all the kids' (and my) stuff, and it's practical.

Did I mention it was boring?

But it sure is practical!

Here is the purse, per request. It's not TOO bad, but it's just nothing exciting.

12.03.2007

Look! A title! (It's gonna be a picturelicious post)

Check it out! I added titles to my blog! It just gets more exciting by the day, doesn't it???

This'll be a quickie, but I'm still expecting loads of comments. Just to let you know.

First, a pic of Maxster from last night, all cuddled up next to me (can I hear a collective "awwwww" from the crowd, please?):

Annnnnd now, a little something from E.'s and my afternoon. We read a book today about a dinosaur and a mouse, and then decided to draw them.

First, E.'s dinosaur. I drew the outline (HUSH. I'm not an art major or anything) and helped her draw the two big polka dots. She scribbled the others and declared she was finished. I asked if she wanted to add eyes or a mouth, but she said no. Then I asked what the dinosaur's name was: Dinosaur Dinosaur.

So, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you:
Dinosaur Dinosaur

(hold your applause until the end, please)

And finally, my masterpiece. I drew a picture of a mouse. And put overalls on him. And for some unexplicable reason, added a paintbrush in his hand.

You may applaud wildly now for:
Robert the Mouse

*bows modestly*

Thank you all, and to all, a good night.

12.02.2007

(I made this on http://www.blyberg.net/card-generator. Cool, huh? I'm such a dork.)

This weekend I:

*Saw my sister dance beautifully in the Nutcracker
*Hung out with D
*Played a million games (and lost spectacularly at most of them. What IS with this losing streak I'm having???)
*Filled out scholarship apps (woohoo!)
*Thought I was going to die of carbon monoxide poisoning (explanation? See below.)
*Ate the yummiest thing in the world--a salad pizza (pizza with salad on top instead of cheese. YUM. Seriously, guys. It's amazing.)
*Watched an episode of Scru.bs that I'd never seen before (ALWAYS a good time)
*Finished my homework in time to be able to sit down tonight and watch Waitress (which I am about to do as soon as I'm done blogging)

Okay. So. Carbon monoxide poisoning.

D. & I were hanging out today playing games and doing homework. We were the only ones home except for Max, my pupster. We were playing with him--or trying to, since he wasn't being very responsive. He was acting really lethargic and didn't really want to be touched. We figured he wasn't feeling well and just left him alone.

A little later, we both got REALLY tired. I mean, seriously tired. D. even started feeling nauseated. It was bizarre.

So what did our little overreactive minds do?

Immediately jump to the conclusion that there's probably carbon monoxide in the air and we're both being poisoned (nevermind that there's a CM detector in the house). We grab Max and run outside, where we're trying to do our homework and wait it out til other people get home and can validate/invalidate our concerns, but it's SO windy that things are blowing everywhere and D. is trying not to throw up and it's generally not good.

THAT'S obviously not working, so we come up with another solution. Go get smoothies (another resounding YUM). We grab the pupster and head to Smoo.thie K.ing where, after a smoothie apiece, we feel better.

So we go home.

I'm still alive and it's several hours later, so I'm assuming I'm okay.

But y'all: if I haven't blogged by, say, next Tuesday, come looking for me.
